this one is a bit near and dear to me, as I was stuck in the school during the lockdown
rand Bay-Westfield RCMP arrested a 13-year-old boy Friday after he allegedly brought an air gun to school.
Police were called to the River Valley Middle School at about 8:45 a.m. The principal of the school had contacted RCMP reporting that a student had brought the air gun to class with him, said Const. Brett Knox of the Grand Bay-Westfield RCMP detachment.
The school was under hold and secure mode, where students and staff are required to remain in their classrooms but can continue to work, for a short period of time until school administrators secured the air gun from the student.
The youth was later released and is set to appear in youth court at a later date. No charges have been laid at this time, Knox said.
Knox said he couldn't comment on why the student allegedly brought the air gun to school, as the incident is still under investigation.
The gun, which was a pellet gun, was brought to the attention of school administrators by students, said Zoe Watson, the superintendent of Anglophone South School District.
Parents were notified of the incident later that day, she said.
Watson said she couldn't give any further details on what took place due to privacy concerns.
However, she said the district's schools regularly practice drills for lockdowns and evacuations, and discuss how to proceed with a hold and secure response "so that everyone understands the seriousness of it."
"Schools are very vigilant about anything that is unusual," she said.
"In this situation, we're very grateful that some students did come forward, because our students would not be permitted to have pellet guns in their bags at school."
